The Concept of Family in James Baldwins Sonnys Blues

Family is one of the primary concepts in James Baldwins short story Sonnys Blues, considering that the connection between the narrator and his brother, Sonny, echoes throughout the text. The writer intended the audience to feel the relationship between the two characters and he initially induced confusion in individuals by hiding the fact that the narrator is Sonnys brother. Most of the story deals with the narrator acknowledging the roles that each of his family members had in shaping his personality and he proceeds to put across his perspective regarding each of them. Baldwin brings forward a story that has a long tradition in the history of mankind, considering that one can associate elements from the biblical account involving Cain and Abel with this text. The narrator experienced a lot of problems throughout his life but managed to emerge victoriously from most of them. Even with this, he needs to support Sonny because this was his mothers dying wish. The death of the narrators daughter, Sonnys failure to fit in with his own family, a stint in the navy all serve to alienate the brothers, even after their mother made the narrator promise to keep an eye on young Sonny (Smith 22). incremental development process makes it the opposite to the rigid requirement needs of the Waterfall method. Agile methodologies are open to change as the project starts and progresses. The contrasting requirements need of the two methodologies, is one of the main contrast points in today’s project life cycle processes. There is a constant struggle between the two processes even in today’s business landscape. I have worked at Google as a program manager - mobile and after Google, I worked at a satellite manufacturing company called Space Systems Loral. The former is a software company and latter is a hardware company. At Google, they have embraced agile methodologies for software development, as the company is very progressive in nature. They are also very open to feedback from their users, and therefore agile allows them to take in product suggestions and address users’ needs with no predetermined rigid requirements from clients or users for initial requ irements. Work is done in mini project or sprints format and when there is a need to shift directions, everything already worked on is scrapped if not necessary, and then a complete reset occurs. The U.S. was transformed from a country of rural farms and small towns to a modern industrial nation dominated by large cities and factories. Leading the way throughout the industrial boom were big businessmen notoriously known for their ruthless business tactics, so should history portray these business leaders as creative industrial pioneers or greedy robber barons? According to Howard Zinn, â€Å"Robber Barons† was accurate in describing these businessmen. He stated â€Å"the new industrialists such as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan adopted business practices that encourage monopolies and used the powers of government to control the masses from rebellion.† (Zinn). Whereas, John S. Gordon argues that such â€Å"the 19th century men of big business such as Rockefeller and Carnegie developed through the oil and steel industries’ consumer p roducts that improved the lifestyles of average Americans† (Gordon). In my view, Howard Zinn presents a more convincing argument of why 19th-century businessmen should be dubbed â€Å"robber barons†. Zinn calls attention to numerous examples of robber barons paying off government officials to pass legislation that would benefit their businesses. The magnitude of corruption becomes evident as Zinn describes President Cleveland’s involvement. President Cleveland appointed chief advisor William Whitney, a millionaire and corporation lawyer, who just so happened to be involved with Standard Oil. After Whitney was appointed to Secretary of Navy he immediately set about to create a â€Å"steel navy,† buying steel at artificially high prices from â€Å"Robber Baron† Andrew Carnegie’s plants (Zinn). John S. Gordon offers little defense to such allegations of corruption and even admits big businessmen utilized secret railroad rebates to dominate their competitors (Gordon).
